There\u2019s a common misconception about designers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That we\u2019re \u201ccreative types.\u201d
That we sit around waiting for inspiration to strike.
That what we do is subjective\u2026 maybe even a little arbitrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I get it. From the outside, it can<\/em> look that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the truth is\u2014design is much closer to programming than it is to pure art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I Learned Early On<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I was studying design at the University of Kansas, I thought I was there to become more creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I actually learned was how to think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to take something subjective and make it structured.
How to defend decisions.
How to design with intention\u2014not just instinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That shift changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The System Behind the Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Design isn\u2019t random.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s built on principles, patterns, and frameworks that have been studied, tested, and refined for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about the work of Paul Rand. His logos weren\u2019t just visually appealing\u2014they were distilled solutions to complex communication problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or the bold, confrontational work of Barbara Kruger, where typography, contrast, and messaging are deliberately engineered to provoke thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And underpinning so much of what we do is Gestalt psychology\u2014a set of principles that explain how humans naturally organize and interpret visual information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These aren\u2019t \u201cvibes.\u201d
They\u2019re systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designers Think More Like Programmers Than Artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At its core, design is input \u2192 process \u2192 output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You give us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • A business goal<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • A target audience<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • A set of constraints<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    And we process that through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Visual hierarchy<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Color theory<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Typography systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • UX patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Behavioral psychology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      What comes out isn\u2019t decoration\u2014it\u2019s a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Not unlike code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A developer writes logic to produce a functional outcome.
      A designer builds visual logic to produce a human outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      Where AI Fits In (And Where It Doesn\u2019t)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Yes\u2014AI can generate visuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And in some ways, it\u2019s doing a version of what designers do:
      absorbing inputs and producing outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But here\u2019s the difference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      AI doesn\u2019t understand context.
      It doesn\u2019t navigate relationships.
      It doesn\u2019t sit across from a client and read between the lines of what they\u2019re saying\u2014and what they\u2019re not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Design isn\u2019t just pattern recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s knowing when to follow the system\u2014and when to break it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      The Part People Miss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The most important part of design isn\u2019t the output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s the trust a client places in you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Translate their ideas into something tangible<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Represent their business accurately<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Help them show up clearly in the world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        That doesn\u2019t come from a formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        That comes from listening, experience, and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n\n\n\n

        Design Is Both<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        So no\u2014design isn\u2019t just art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        And it\u2019s not just a formula either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        It\u2019s a system guided by human insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        A balance of logic and intuition.
        Structure and flexibility.
        Data and empathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        And that\u2019s exactly why it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
